One of Those Days

All, or at least a lot of, mothers secretly wonder if everyone else thinks their kids are monsters. I mean, we see them at their best and their worst, and it all seems to balance out. Sure they have their bad days, but are they that bad? They can be so sweet and adorable sometimes! Feedback from the outside world is unpredictable and inconsistent. The same day I have a librarian commend my girls for their exceptional behavior at the library, I get "the look" from my mother when my daughter goes streaking through the house butt naked singing at the tops of her lungs. So I am left to wonder as to my child's true identity, and my opinion sways based on the day's evidence. Today, I am firmly convinced my eldest daughter's sole purpose in life is to drive me crazy. Here is the evidence:

I put Selah down for her morning nap, and tried to grab a quick shower. It was almost 11:00 after all, and I was still in my jammies with my hair askew. I told Elianna to play outside the door, which I left open so I could watch her, and warned her that, sudsy and dripping wet or not, I would come out if necessary. "I be a GOOD girl." she assured me. What I could see of her through the curtain she seemed to be playing happily, and for a moment I congratulated myself on my self-sufficient, obedient child. The warm fuzzy feeling was not to last long. When I got out of the shower, I discovered that she had been playing with a basket of hair accessories that contained, oh, about 974 tiny little clips, rubber bands, bows, and goodness knows how many other delightful choking hazards that were now strewn all over her bedroom floor. I told her to clean it up, and after picking up about three clips she decided to dump out her Mega blocks instead. So, I did the calm rational thing. I locked her door, and told her she wasn't coming out until it was all cleaned. She immediately threw a tantrum, and declared "She loved Daddy and wanted him to come home." I got the hint, but felt like yelling back, "I want him to come home, too! I would rather be at the mall drinking Starbucks and trying on shoes than engaging in a battle of the wills with a precocious two-year-old!" Instead,I just went in, hugged her and had a heart-to-heart talk about how dangerous it would be for Selah to eat her hair stuff, so hurry and get it all cleaned before she wakes up. I went to make lunch, and miraculously she picked up all the hair stuff. Crisis averted. Then the phone rings. Now, with Elianna the phone ringing triggers a primeval response from deep within that demands my attention at any cost. She will do, quite literally, anything to get my attention while I am on the phone, but I figured with the whole hair accessory incident behind us, our relationship had progressed beyond this. I was wrong. In the first two minutes of conversation, Elianna climbed up on the counter and nearly emptied a bottle of seasoned salt all over everything. Pausing, of course, to draw some cool designs in the process. I put her in time out, and started cleaning up the mess. Mom somehow managed to give me "the look" over the phone (how mothers manage to send their disapproval over the telephone wires, I'll never know) and stated the obvious, "It's because you're on the phone." I took this as a dare, as if she was saying, "Well, we can cut our conversation short, but then you will be giving in to the whims of the child you apparently cannot control." Hmmmm. So, I decided to prove my parenting and multi-tasking skills and finish our planning. (That was the reason for the call - we were planning a trip out of town.) I then casually mentioned something I had written for a contest, and decided it was safe to run upstairs for two minutes to read her the little blurb I had entered. When I came back downstairs, Elianna had been feverishly scooping ground coffee out of the coffee can... into my coffee cup. Maybe she thought I needed the boost, but since I only drink decaf this was rather pointless. Hearing me coming down she panicked and tried to cover up her crime by pouring the grounds (and my coffee) back into the can. Back into time out she went, with a swat for good measure. I cleaned the mess while she bawled. I am still trying to downplay this all to my mother, and at the same time talk faster so we can finish up and I can settle my children down. (Selah woke up during the clean-up of the coffee incident and was crawling around merrily throughout all of this.) Suddenly I realize that Elianna is sitting very quietly in time out. A little too quietly. So quietly, it's almost as though she... isn't even there. Because she wasn't. She had sneaked into the other room with a bottle of cocoa butter and was applying it all over herself and anything within reach. By this time, I have remembered why I never attempt phone conversations while Elianna is awake, and decide not even to answer my phone the rest of the day. It doesn't help. Elianna goes on to play a fun game called Empty Out Every Container of Toys and then Refuse to Pick Any Up, and I spend the next 30-45 minutes begging, threatening, cajoling, beseeching, and anything else short of hollering like a redneck trailer queen to get her to pick everything up. Slowly but surely, she does manage to put the bulk of it back in its appropriate containers, and I am delighted to see that it is FINALLY nap time. I resist the urge to chuck her into her bed from the hallway, instead spending some time cuddling her and letting her know I do love her... even when she makes me crazy. She smiles at me sweetly and says, "When I wake up, I want to play with Sissy!"
Oh dear, I'd better go hide the baby.

Library Day

Today we headed out for our weekly trek to the library. We have fallen into a routine that runs basically like this:

Return our old books, checking them off the printout. (Since we get on average about 15 books, we have to stay organized or those fines can really add up.)

Head to the non-fiction section first. The only part Elianna is interested in right now is the animal section. She yells "Eeew, gross!" every time at the bug section, then moves on.

Check out the "New Books" shelf. I'm not sure what makes these books inherently cooler than all the other books, but Elianna always ends up with 2 or 3 "new releases."

Pull up a chair to the picture books. This is where we hunker down, park Selah's stroller next to the board books and let her go to town, and read, read, read... We keep the ones that look cool, as well as the random ones Elianna throws in the basket when I'm not looking. (One day I found a book called "Black Cowboy, Wild Horses" in the stroller. My daughter is just so into diversity! Okay, she probably just liked the horses, one of her latest crazes.) We try to keep the librarian from banning us by putting away the ones we don't like rather than leaving them scattered all over.

Last, I let her pick out 2 videotapes, and then begin negotiations as to which one she can watch before nap.

Check everything out. Elianna hands the books, one at a time, to be checked out. (Fortunately, our small-town library is, for the most part, very patient with her idiosyncrasies.)

Finally, we load everything into the stroller, say our good-byes, and head to McDonald's for an ice cream. (It's a cheap date so far, since we all three split one hot fudge sundae. An afternoon out for only $1.06 with tax!) By now, it's close to nap time so we head home, read a few books, watch a video and hit the sack. (Well, they hit the sack, and I make dinner.)

Elianna just LOVES us to read to her, and after hearing a book only a couple times can tell you what will happen or sometimes even recite much of it back to you. She also tries to read to Selah, although she gets frustrated when Selah crawls away or tries to eat the book. Chad and I both love to read, and we believe it is very important to instill a love for the written word in children as young as possible!

The Great Blog Divide

I have decided to split into two blogs. I will keep this one as the "everyday life" journal of my little munchkins, and a second for all the other fun stuff I like to blog about. Sometimes the subject matter just doesn't seem to flow bouncing back and forth between Selah's first tooth and whatever current event catches my fancy. So, check out Blog #2... if you dare. (Just kidding, it's not that bad.)

I hate to break it to you...

My friend Carol from church shared this story, and it was just too funny to keep to myself. She picks up her 4-year-old granddaughter Bella and brings her to church. One day, as Bella was watching her get ready, she announces, "Grandma, you have a big butt." It was a simple, matter-of-fact statement. Not meant to hurt feelings, just stating a fact. She then lifted up her grandma's skirt and examined her legs. "You have really big legs, too!" Carol decided to ignore it. Later, she announced she was going on Weight Watchers. Bella asked what "Weight Watchers" was, and Carol told her, "You'll be happy to know, if I join Weight Watchers it will make my butt and legs get smaller." Bella seemed satisfied with this answer and went on her way. The next time Carol went to pick her up, Bella ran over, grabbed Carol's skirt and jerked it up almost to her waist. She surveyed the view, then turned to Carol and said gravely, "Grandma, it's not working!"

Busy Busy Busy...

I haven't had a chance to post lately... last week was "Neighborhood Bible Time" at our church. (Our church has been doing this program for over 20 years! It is an amazing outreach, both to introduce kids to church as well as encouraging Christian kids and teens to dedicate their lives to Christ.) It's a lot like youth camp, you just don't have to go out-of-town. I worked with the junior high age group as both secretary and counselor, and although I enjoyed the week immensely I am just plain TIRED. I will try to catch up on all the momentous occurences on our life. (That shouldn't take long.) I just got scolded today for going too long without posting... so I figured I'd let you all know what's been going on!!! I will be back soon with pictures in hand - I promise.

Retail Therapy

It's days like today I am SOOO thankful I have an understanding husband. We have one of those rare marriages where neither of us nags the other one about spending money. We both respect each other's judgment, we both know how much money is (or isn't!) in the bank, and on days like today when Chad comes home to a pile of shopping bags he knows I must have hit some great deals!!!!

I can't even REMEMBER the last time I just went out shopping. For the fun of it. With two little ones, shopping is a nightmare reserved only for staving off starvation, buying basic essentials, or dashing in to grab some last-minute forgotten item. It's never fun. Today, however, was Elianna's day with Grandma, Selah was in a great mood, and I had gotten a postcard from Toys 'R Us saying that all their clearance was 1/2 off. (They do this twice a year, and it's a great time to stock up on clothes for the next season at a fraction of the price.) So, I packed Selah up and off we went. Of course, I can't drive all the way to Toys 'R Us and not check out Old Navy... and a few other stores. Selah was a doll, grinning, waving and giggling at everyone. I even found a skirt I have been eyeing for months... for 40% off! (So naturally I had to buy the shirt to go with it!) I had so much fun actually shopping. Not glancing at racks as I fly by headed for the diapers that Elianna just ran out of. I mean BROWSING. Wandering aimlessly through the clothes. Trying stuff on just for the heck of it. *Sigh* It was great. I originally told my Mumsie-in-law that I had planned on getting the house cleaned.... and I ended up getting home just minutes before she got back with Elianna! So, my house was still exactly the way I left it this morning, there are all my great finds all over the couch... and Chad surprises me by coming home early! As I said earlier, I am SOOO glad he is the understanding type. (He was actually impressed with all the deals I found!) He also didn't care about the cluttered house. In fact, after dinner we walked to the lake and fed the ducks the rest of the evening. What a way to end the day! So, my house is still a mess, but it can wait. Life doesn't.
